Hi Tom,
Nice hearing from you... Actually, I should update that picture.... I am
now
about 50 lbs lighter than I was when that one was taken... But, I was
definitely on the larger side of life.... Now, I am about 5'11" and weigh
about 185. The picture in the Rogue's Gallery is what I looked like at
diagnosis about a year and a half ago.
impressive :)
As far as the question of which of us is in better health, I am certainly
not in a position to even begin to say.... I would affirm, however, that I
am in far better health now than I was a year and a half ago..... For me,
what did the trick was going to a low carb diet (fewer than 100 carbs a
day)
so far it does look great. only the future can tell.
moderate to high protein, and moderation in the fat department, with
especial focus upon moderating saturated fat in favor of some counter
emphasis upon monounsaturated fats, like olive oil, or polyunsaturated
fats,
like canola. I also eat lots of greens, onions, peppers, mushrooms, and
other things that go well in salads,
i do eat my low carb veggies, about 15 carbs worth per meal is what I shoot
for.
for myself i couldnt think of eating 100 carbs of that stuff. I would
probably end up on a very high fat diet. 100 carbs of brocolli is a lot of
broccoli and if you subtract the fiber lol WOW.
about 4450 grams of brocolli or about 20 packages of brozen broccoli and
broccoli has about twice as many carbs as things like cauliflower. i just
couldnt eat that much of that green stuff and would no doubt be getting most
of my calories from meats and the fats those little darlings contain.
sure i like some veggy fats but would probably go for the extra 2 inch
porthouse steak ( cause my meter says i can :) ) over the olives. for me its
good to add some complex carbs like whole grain rye crackers, brown rice and
even that old style slow cooked oat meal. I just couldnt eat 100 carbs of
low carb veggies in one day, everyday.
and when I do carbs, they tend to be of
the complex variety, with a low glycemic value, like kidney beans, or
garbanzos.... I try to limit overall calorie consumption to about 1300
per
day and get in at least a 30 minute walk on most days
walking is good i also do that everyday. however for myself i should be
working my way on being able to do true cardio for 30 minutes per day for
most days of the week.
i guess what saved me was that in the 4 years that i have known i was
diabetic, i did have my moments of motivation and did like the doctor
ordered. it might explain why i have not only been able to get off all
medications but can easily eat the foods in the amounts that so many in here
scream will SPIKE them.
.... In the mornings, I
frequently have one piece of sprouted whole grain toast, and at lunch I
usually have a veggie wrap from Subway.... The rest I make up at dinner,
with one or two glasses of dry red wine, as recommended by the Harvard
School of Public Health.
for me wine is like potato chips.. i cant just have 2.
The reason I said I was not quite satisfied with a low fat diet, per se,
is
that one has to get calories from somewhere... if a person goes low carb,
and low fat, the question becomes whether a very high protein diet would
be
necessary to compensate,
i guess if one was to choose to go low carb and low fat. still looking at
the amount of fat in soy, even still i would love to know if that diet would
still be concidered low fat.
and if so, would it necessarily be healthy?
like you said.. one has to get calories from someplace.
as far as eating extra anything - i dont know if that is healthy.
however most scientists
that do not have a book to sell are not really sure what is healthy.
most data they have from modern research. and the data they have researching
coltures that lived from now into 100,000 of years ago. they know how much
cultures lived, worked and most important to us they know what they ate and
how they died.
I do
not have any kidney problems, so I am not that worried about the high
protein, but it seems to me that some moderation there is in order,
also....
especially where soy is concerned.
i hope the scientists that do say there is something to worry about when
eating to much protien even with healthy kidneies are wrong.
Maybe I ought to change that picture..... The reason I left it up there
was
as a sort of look at me as I was at diagnosis.
no dont change it.. ad the new picture next to it and lets hope you dont
have to delete later on.
Hope you are having a great evening.
Will, T2
not bad, lots of work and having fun doing it. Hope your evening is going
as delightful.
when having your 2 glasses of wine.. save a little for that special lady in
your life.
studies has shown.. when my wife drinks - my blood sugar levels go lower.
