And my question is: Would a qualified medical professional give you any
better information?
In a word, yes.
What is dangerous about getting a diabetic to avoid spikes? Please tell me.
Avoiding spikes is one thing, telling people with diabetes that they
should be under 110 at all times and that if they are over 140 at 30
minutes after eating is cause for alarm is quite another thing. For a
rare few, these numbers may be possible. But for the large majority of
diabetics they are not. Even most of the people in here who are very
proactive with their control could not and should not hit those kinds
of numbers. People read proclamations like that in here and feel that
if they don't reach those lofty goals that they have failed.
For God's sake grow up! What middle aged weight lifter is ever going
to achieve the muscles of Schwarzennegger? What amateur runner is ever
going to reach a four minute mile? How many aspiring writers will win
the Booker prize? You haven't failed if you can't make the lofty
goals, but it's important to know what the best people are capable of,
and you're never going to find out what *you* are really capable of if
you don't aim higher than you think you can reach. Failure and
disappointment are important parts of life and learning.
That
leads to either giving up or trying so hard they could do great harm to
themselves.
This newsgroup has a rather good record of persuading newbies to get
much better control and results than their doctors thought they were
capable of or needed to bother trying for. You can be sure that anyone
who had come to harm through advice they got here would be letting us
know loud and clear.
Can you hear the silence?
The bar is set so high in here by a few people that
Shaquille O'neal could walk under it.
And as they have reported, some folk have been able to jump up and
grab it, and tell us how they think they managed it.
Your criticisms would have some weight if you could point to any
evidence that these hypothetical very stupid people you keep worrying
so much about really exist, and have actually been harmed by reading
this newsgroup. There's plenty of evidence to be had of people finding
valuable help here. In the two years I've been reading the group I
can't recall any instances of alleged harm, apart from the allegations
of one or two obvious nutcases.
