T1 delurking

Hey everybody!

I've seen a few others delurk recently, so I figured I'd pop-up and
introduce myself.

I got dx'ed with 'juvenile' diabetes last August at the age of 52.
Yes, it's definitely T1 and I have a couple of other autoimmune
diseases - Graves' disease almost killed me a year earlier. Spent a
week in intensive care recovering from DKA - what a trip that was.
This was a complete shocker, because I had a normal glucose finger
stick test 2 weeks earlier. My glucose level was about 996 when I got
to the emergency room - pretty good hallucinations going on, and I lost
feeling in my hands and feet for weeks. The coolest effect (which I
had not heard about prior to experiencing it) was my myopia, which I've
had since age 10 or so, was 'cured' for a month. As an old fart
though, I needed reading glasses for the first time. This all returned
to normalcy (my regular prescription in the right eye, and slightly
better vision in the left, no need for reading glasses) after 2 months.

While I was learning how to deal with testing and injections and diet
and the schedule (the hardest part because I live a very unstructured
life - haven't owned a watch for 20 years), my diabetes buddy was my
youngest son's girlfriend who was dx'ed at age 9. She pretty much
forced me to be pragmatic about this - I mean here's this teenaged girl
who's been living the lifestyle for 8 years already, dealing with high
school, adolescence, my idiot boy (I *do* love him), and no complaints.
I got on track right away, did my research, got my glucose levels
down, and have been very stable - my last A1C was 6.2% which I'm pretty
happy about - rarely above 135, just a few minor hypos.

So, hi. Nice to meet you all!
