AFIK, (having been a member of several local charities' boards) they don't get paid anything. They are often chosen for their fund-raising skills and/or connections. Some people like the way board seats look on a resume, others come from a corporate culture that pushes being a board member of a charity. For me it was an honor to have served on these boards and the payment came in having a good feeling that I was doing something positive to help others.
