I've got a couple of pear trees too (no fruit yet, they're still kind
of young, about 3 years old) and they're a bit of a pain to prune and
manage. They're semi-dwarfs, but are tall, and their habit is to grow
straight up.
Mine are covered with branch spreaders trying to get some decent
semi-horizontal growth going on them and to avoid the narrow angles
between branches, but each time we have a windstorm they keep blowing
out of the trees.
I can see why you wouldn't like cherries after getting whacked with the
branches :lol:.
