We are originally from the New York Metro area. We don't consider a low carb tortilla with sauce and cheese to be a "decent alternative" <g>
Getting serious, if he plans properly for the one slice, it's not a meter-buster. Once a year when we go to NJ we get real pizza. We know how it will effect his BGs and we take necessary steps to prevent the bad numbers, like exercise and only one slice with a big, big, salad on the side.

Does he carb count, and if so, what do you guesstimate for the carbs in one slice of real pizzeria pizza? I'm in NYC and haven't had real pizza in awhile. When I was on MDI I would always go low, then high. Actually I would go low, go lower, go low some more and then go high! I've now been on a pump for a year and would like to try pizza again but trying to figure out the carbs is a problem. All of the info I find online is for chain store pizza like Dominos or Pizza Hut. When I see something saying that 1 slice of pizza has 30 or 35 carbs I have to laugh. I imagine those slices are probably no bigger than a slice of apple pie.
Yes he carb counts. My best guess is somewhere around 25g for the crust. We don't count the tomato. You do have to test PPs because the fat in the cheese can creep up the BG readings and you might need a corrective bolus. One generous slice, folded in half to drip off the extra oil <g> and a big salad on the side. A long walk afterward or a "roll in the hay" helps <vbg>
