Although I woke up this morning with a blood sugar reading of 153, it
came down within two hours, and for the first time since I started
testing my levels it has been below 126 for the rest of the day. My
most previous reading, about a half-hour ago, was 113. I'm very happy
with the progress I am making, especially because I feel so committed to
what I'm doing and have lost all interest in the foods I once ate and
have found my appetite to be much less than it once was. Whereas I used
to be able to gobble a 20" hoagie in one sitting, today I had six slices
of bacon and four chicken wings for breakfast and haven't eating
anything since because I haven't been hungry. I have also lost since
Thursday. I now weigh 293.4 instead of 295. I want to thank everyone
for their support and help in my journey through this.
You may have had high BG for longer than you realized. High BG can cause
you to be VERY hungry! Prior to my diagnosis, I was working at a golf
course with a bunch of pregnant women. They would often call in sick or be
unable to work their shift because of a Drs. appointment. We did have a
snack bar but it was only open until 2:00 and if we got busy, there was no
way I could go get any food. Plus the menu was limited and they didn't
always have anything I considered edible. So I got into the habit of
bringing my lunch. And since I was often covering someone else's shift
until dark, I started bringing in dinner as well. After a while I realized
I was eating the lunch and dinner and then also going home and eating a
"snack" that could easily pass for a meal! The hunger would simply overtake
me.
And a couple of days before I was diagnosed, we went out to eat. I felt
like I was starving. I ordered a chili burger and fries. This was not the
sort of thing I normally ate and hadn't eaten one since I was a kid. But I
just felt so hungry I couldn't stand it. Then something happened and they
forgot to put in my order. They brought everyone else's food but not mine.
I almost broke down in tears because I felt sooooo hungry! And during this
time, I'd had bouts where I was so sick to my stomach, I didn't dare eat
anything. I figured my feeling starved was from going so many days without
eating. More likely, I was feeling sick due to the high BG and the hunger
was also due to the high BG. Once I started the meds and changed my diet
(I'd had GD prior and was familiar with the diabetic diet) my hunger went
away.

That's been my experience. Before I found out that I had type 2, I used
to pack these HUGE lunches because I was afraid of the hunger I knew I'd
experience if I didn't pack enough. Now my lunch is a ham and cheese
sandwich on low-carb bread (which I just bought today in place of the
Weight Watchers bread cause it is lower in carbs, has no trans-fat, and
has Omega-3), a stick of string cheese, a small bag of pork rinds and a
low-carb candy bar. I used to pack three times that, and I'd eat every
bit of it. On Friday's after work I'd always stop by the sub shop and
grab a monster hoagie and have it gone within an hour. When I look back
on that I feel so stupid for doing those things. I knew that what I was
doing was bad, but I just didn't care.
