Mass turns out to be chronic hematoma

If you are an old geezer like me who bicycles a lot and takes 81 mg. aspirin
daily, you might just fall off your bike one day and a month later find
you've got a rapidly growing mass that the average orthopedist will diagnose
as a cyst or a tumor. You may start taking Ibuprofin for the discomfort.
After an MRI, a radiologist may diagnose a tumor but hold out the slim
possibility of a "chronic hematoma."
Then, if you are in the habit of Googling, you might find this article
entitled: Chronic Expanding Hematoma Mimicking Soft Tissue Neoplasm
http://www.jco.org/cgi/content/full/19/11/2971
You might want to prepare evidence to take to your orthopedic surgeon: the
article and a history of your recent trauma and the rapid growth of your
mass.
Your surgeon may agree with the hematoma diagnosis and schedule you for
surgery without suggesting you stop your aspirin therapy.
Before surgery, you might want to stop taking your daily dose of aspirin,
(with the consent of your internist of course--I'm covering my ass here).
You should also avoid Advil, Ibuprofin or other anti-coagulants which will
make the mass rise like bread dough with yeast.
In four days, you may find that you don't need surgery as the chronic
hematoma begins to rapidly shrink.
I cancelled the surgery today.
