They are. And they have major quality control problems that make them completely useless. My Aviva was replaced in the recall. The strips the company sent me with the replacement meter worked fine. Then I bought a box at the pharmacy and they read up to 50 mg/dl higher (not always, just sometimes) than the company's strips and my Ultra. When I told my pharmacist, he told me he thought they were having a major problem with the quality control on the strips and recommended the Ultra.

So throw the Aviva in the trash and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble. Maybe the strips you buy will work, maybe they won't. Why gamble.

In my case, since I was using the meter to measure my response to my first insulin regimen, the abnormally high readings kept my doctor and I from realizing I was hypoing since quite a few of the 100s I recorded appear to have been 50s.

Plus there was the fun part where the doctor's nurse thought I was a nutcase since I was reporting bizarre symptoms with a blood sugar supposedly of 100.
