This is total minutia, but it does bother me. When an original poster
asks a question and then disappears from the discussion, I find it so
strange, Why ask if you dont want to participate. I see many threads
where a question is answered and there could. be twenty or more posts,
yet the original poster never responds.
Does anyone else feel this way.
I say to myself, why bother.
Why bother? Because Google Groups will serve up that same answer thread the next time someone searches on related terms. For many of the questions we ask here, those questions are asked over and over again.
That is the single most important reason I bother posting on the unmoderated newsgroup as opposed to putting the same energy into a moderated discussion board.
In a discussion board, your posting gets seen only at the time the discussion ensues and because of the very poor searching abilities of most bulletin board software your post will vanish afterwards without a trace. Google doesn't index most of the message boards, either, particularly those that use databases to store messages.
So as clunky as the interface is here, and as annoying as the lack of moderation may be, I feel good to think that the things we here spend time researching and posting about are easily found by those who will need them in the future.
And trust me, people DO search on these topics, day in and day out, often in languages that you or I could not begin to understand, thanks to the magic of Google translation.
