The normal range in most labs is probably too high, according to my
doctor. She keeps me at the low end of the range; so low that
occasionaly, when my thyroid decides to work a little harder, I am
hyperthyroid. I've learned to recognise this and ask for a test as I
just did a couple of weeks ago. My dose is lowered until my next test
shows me higher than the doc likes. Not all doctors believe in the
low-end plan. Your grandmother might not need anymore testing than an
occasional blood draw if the doctor were to put her on a low-dose
thyroid med - usually synthroid or a generic. The practice is to begin
with a very low dose and gradually work up, especially with an older
person.
As to it helping with memory - I don't know that it would make a lot of
difference. When I was hypothirod for 4-5 years I don't remember
having any memory problems that I noticed. I had a variety of skin
problems, general muscle aches, lack of energy, and a sense of being
behind a veil - seeing the rest of the world through a screen. Within
a month on synthroid many of these resolved, and all did after a year
on a dose that put my test results at the low end of normal.
Have these memory problems been discussed with her doctor?
