Mary,
I think the government should ban the ads from the children's programs,
just as they banned cigarette ads from the whole of TV. Parents who work
can still do things that are active with the kids on weekends or on summer
evenings like bike riding, ball playing, etc, even in cities where I grew
up and have lived all my life. Schools should also have run-around recess
on most days except the coldest or rainy ones.

Parents have to take responsability for what foods are in the house and
what they put onthe dinner table or in the lunch box and see that smaller
kids, say elementary and even jr HS kids don't have enough allowance to
permit buying lots of candy, and other junk. When my boys ewere young
they found that they could but 1 candy bar a week or get several bagels
for their alowance, so bought and ate seedy bagels after school istead of
sweet treats. I also didn't keep sugary sod inthe house and they learned
to drink water when thirsty, then take a small glass of milk or juice for
a snack. Well, all my god plans worked well with one som and not the
other, one is slim and the other very not, but this developed after his
marriage.
