Re: policosonol and Omega 3 fish oil suppliments

thank you for your comments Rudy....... they will
be given great consideration before i allow us to
go 'close to meatless'

i'm getting the feeling that hubby will be happy
with 2 oz of meat twice a week :-(

i think that is contrary to my diet which is 100gm
of carb a day......... sigh we'll have to come to
some compromise along the way

Al........... my partner has been reading 50
ways
to lower your cholesterol

he's come out of reading it thinking that NO
meat
is the way to go

has he taken one point and emphasized it
unnecessarily??? (i don't get the book until
he's
finished it)

kate

Hello, Kate

While I'm not familiar with that book, I can say
that no meat is not really
a good way to go for most people most of the
time. It is extremely difficult
to get to complete proteins with a meatless
diet. It can be done with
suppliments., and some people will feel better
on a meatless or nearly
meatless diet. That's all to the good. An
absolute vegan type way of eating
is very difficult. There are almost no dietary
requirements that cannot be
gotten with a sound dietary plan. There are some
though. It is a lot easier
if one allows fish and eggs. Or milk and cheese.
That's a very much easier
plan and is pretty manageable for most folks.
Some, of course can't eat fish
or milk or cheese. I don't know a way around
this problem for them except
supplementation which is available.

People are really like bears, omnivours. We are
supposed to do a lot of
walking and eat everything palatible we find
along the way.

It has been awhile since I looked into this
deeply. But I have done so since
my son has often been vegetarian and sometimes
vegan. He does have some
pretty serious allergies to many things and has
probelms finding things he
can safely eat. The list is long. You know what
trouble our friend Julie
Bove and her daughter have. His are simililar
trials. Sometimes though he
really needs to eat some kind of meat or other
animal product. Cheese,
chicken. Something. We always try to help him
with his dietary plan. I
personally don't always agree with it, but I
don't have all the same
problems he does. I have my own different
problems. He can eat things I
cannot and vice versa.

If one can eat eggs and cheese, they should. I
have eaten eggs. It is very
iffy for me. I get completely nausious with any
kind of poultry product. But
I also can't spell so, go figure.

The take away points are that dietary
cholesterol is not blood cholesterol
(which I know I didn't mention, but I repeat
dietary cholesteral is not
blood cholesterol, totaly different) and meat or
some supplementation is
absolutely vitally necessary for human
survivial, though, generally, one can
do fine without it for long periods. This can be
much more difficult than
just carb control and requires a lot of serious
investigation for
nutritional necessities.

rudy

I would appreciate input regarding the
addition of supplements for the
high cholesterol; Omega 3 fish oils and
Policosonol

I know the Omega 3 fish oil is good for
diabetics but what about the
policosonol?
Jackie

Fish oil and policosanol are both
recommended
in:

"50 Ways to Lower Your Cholesterol".
McGowan,
Mary P., M.D.

Dr. McGowan also recommends:

Benecol Margarine
Olive Oil

Policosanol
Garlic
Guggul

time-release Niacin
Psyllium
Fish oil
Walnuts
Ground Flax Seed

I tried the lot and got very, very good
results. Of course, since I
started taking all of them at once, I can't
tell if any of them worked
better than any other.

Susan's Pantethine post is also right on.
When I added Pantethine to Dr.
McGowan's list, my HDL took a very welcome
leap
upwards.

Old Al
