Re: policosonol and Omega 3 fish oil suppliments

Hello Will:

Anyway, if you do take policosonol, there is some evidence that it can block
CoQ10 manufacture in your liver, so you might want to consider supplementing
with CoQ10 as well...

CoQ10 - also known as ubiquinol-10.

Statins are also known for inhibiting endogenous (from your own body's metabolism) CoQ10. Supplemental CoQ10 is not considered very bioavailable. The problem has to do with the CoQ10 entering into the inside of cells where the mitochondria reside. There is a bi-lipid layer on the outside of cells that the supplemental (exogenous) CoQ10 has to penetrate. Mitochondria are the energy engines of the body and as a result of oxidizing carbohydrate and fat sources produce a lot of oxidative stress (maybe 95% of the body's oxidative stress production).

"CoQ10 is prevalent in humans, with high endogenous concentration found in the heart, liver, kidney and pancreas. ... It can be synthesized in the body therefore CoQ10 is not considered to be an essential nutrient. It is present in foods such as beef, poultry and broccoli.3 Other sources of CoQ10 are soy oil, fish oils, peanuts, sardines and mackerel. Dietary intake of CoQ10 is 2-5 mg per day, which is always inadequate to provide levels in the body required to be beneficial in pathological states. The total body content of CoQ10 is 0.4 to 1.5 gm.." Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) : Implications in Clinical Practice - http://www.bhj.org/april2005/htm/reveiw_coenzyme_145.htm

I have been doing some scholar.google.com searches in the last week or so trying to make sense out of this bioavailability issue with CoQ10. I haven't come close to getting a grasp on this topic but none the less as follows:
1. CoQ10+bioavailability+mitochondria - 56 finds - http://tinyurl.com/8ss5m.
2. CoQ10+Limonene - 5 finds - http://tinyurl.com/dkmlf. [orange oil (Limonene)]
3. CoQ10+orange+oil - 32 finds - http://tinyurl.com/d2mca.
4. synthesis+CoQ10 - 398 finds - http://tinyurl.com/8krx4.

Google group search for MitoQ10 - http://groups.google.com/groups?q=mitoQ10. There are a few threads on this topic, all of which were posted to sci.life-extension newsgroup.
This is not a commercial product at this time.
