Re: Fatty Liver

Julie, a liver biopsy (generally follows ultrasound, CT scan, MRI) secured my diagnosis of
NAFL/NASH last year. My liver problems came years before my diabetes diagnosis, when my
autoimmune diseases and asthma flared really, really big (mid 90's). At that time, my raised
liver enzymes were watched closely, and my doctor managed my corticosteroids very closely. All
of my other tests were outstanding, especially my lipids; not overweight, and very active except
during acute flares. About three years ago they were getting ready to switch me from oral
methotrexate to weekly injections, but the lab work came back baaaaaaaaad............. My doctor
said that suddenly the methotrexate had just blown my liver away, my enzymes were sky high.
This meant stopping the methotrexate, :( the only thing besides prednisone that has ever done me
any good with my autoimmune diseases (especially RA). This is when they did the biopsy, to be
sure and get a correct diagnosis, and to make sure nothing else was gong on. Stopping the med,
and trying to eat less fat, and x? months later my enzymes were back to normal. We started the
methotrexate injections then, and *so far* everything is doing okay. Like you, I searched the
web for any and everything, and beside stopping the offending medication, the low-fat diet was
the only other thing to do. If you keep on with the weight loss, and reduce your fats, you're
enzymes should begin coming down..... at least, I sure hope they do!! It just seems like it is
one thing after another doesn't it???? *I* surely know that feeling, and feel for you.
(((hugs)))

I also have a tenderness in the liver area which has started again, and I am hoping my enzymes
are still on track. There just isn't a lot to do for some of these connective tissue diseases.

Don't know if I left something out, or got anything mixed up, especially time-wise; my mind
skips around a bit nowadays.

(((((HUGS)))))

: Got my Ultrasound results back today after a trip to the Dr. for a nasty

:
: The cause of my elevated liver enzymes is a fatty liver. I was told (and
: have since confirmed this online) that this is common in diabetics. Also
: common in alcoholics and overweight people. There isn't much they can do
: for it. She said the treatment in my case would be to try to lose more

:
: The good news is now that I've eliminated the allergenic foods from my diet,
: the weight is dropping right off of me! I lost two pounds the first week
: and four pounds this week. This despite the lack of exercise from feeling
: and being so ill.
:
: If anything, my caloric intake has gone up a bit. I am now eating pumpkin
: seeds and coconut almost every day. Am taking lemon and lime juice in
: water.
:
: I'm still having an odd assortment of symptoms as the allergens leave my
: system. I guess this can take a while. But I am very pleased to no longer
: have the bloated, pregnant looking stomach. And I seem to be walking better
: too! My legs don't seem to get as tired as they were and I haven't had any
: muscle cramps for a few days.
