Meters are a very individual thing with diabetics. One meter might
be fantastic for one and crappy for another. The meter that's rated
iirc best on the market is the LifeScan Ultra. This is my primary meter,
for a few reasons, my insurance pays for its strips and it's the prefered
meter for my Animas Pump (pump software downloads my meter also)
Not my prefered meter is the Therasense Flash -- both came with a crappy
lancet device. I kept the lancet device from my Accu-Chek Advantage
and used it until my dog snacked on it one morning <g> --

I went 3 weeks using the one that came with the Ultra, and finally
coughed up the $17 to get a Accu-Chek Active _just_ to get the
lancet device out of it... well worth the $$ imho.

I like the Flash because it's smaller, and has a great backlight on it for
testing
in the dark.

I'd also suggest if you have insurance you see *what* meter they will cover
strips for -- often you can get a free meter also, so might try that
first -- just
call a few of the meter companies and tell them you're a new diabetic and
are
in need of a meter -- most will send free, they want you to buy their strips
to
keep bleeding(no pun intended) your pocket-book dry monthly. <g>

Good Luck
