Yup "pinging" was, and still is, used to mean listening for a response to
a signal.
The Sonar sent a pinging sound and the equipment operator listened for the
signal bouncing back off of the other vessel. Pinging is also use to test
circuits on the net. A program sends a request and looks to see if there
is a response, and how long the response takes. "Pinging" a person is
just a request for a response - usually in the group. A way of saying
"Hay ...."
