Re: Byetta is for everybody!!

Hi Alan,

You wrote inresponse to sharppointy1 that:
"Maybe I'm unduly skeptical because this glowing testimonial
to Byetta has appeared from a new poster out of the blue, in
the wake of other posts by non-diabetic investors in the
product. "

While the original post proclaiming that Byetta is for everybody
undoubtedly overstated its worth, and while there are undoubtedly
posters scamming their own self-interest on unmoderated groups such as
this one, your response is typical of what is quite wrong with this
group. In your post, you have extended your skepticism to someone who
almost accidentally stepped into the line of fire, so to speak, which
way too many of the threads here tend to become. Usually I make a point
of ignoring such threads, but I am responding to your step in this
direction because I know from previous knowledge that you tend towards
reasoned discourse, and don't fly off the handle as a matter of rule,
or rude, which somehow has become an accepted norm on alt.support
diabetes, a norm which probably drives away a whole lot more people
than just me.

shaprpointy1 has been posting on the ADA board for a while now, and is
an honest sharer and seeker of knowledge on all things diabetic. Her
foray onto this board resulted in Peter's sarcasm, which provoked her
to an outburst in response that is totally uncharacteristic of her
usual tone. I wonder if she will stick around here and invest the time
to wade through the bickering back-and-forth wars that seem to creep in
here with regularity. The pity is that there are a lot of very
knowledgeable folk in this group with interesting and diverse points of
view who care about learning and about educating others who come here
looking for information to help solve their very real health problems.
When thread after thread degenerates into name calling or hurling
insults back and forth, we all lose, and whenever we personally
participate in it, even on a mild level, it diminishes our credibility.

I suspect it is only because I know sharpointy from previous
cyber-experience that I am raising this here on this particular thread.
When other people here have flamed back and forth, it has been
relatively easy to ignore because I do not know any of them--with the
exception of you, Alan. But I doubt if I am the only one who finds it
quite disturbing when a thread starts out with an honest discussion of
a real problem and then goes on for another 80 posts in which any
sharing of knolwedge has been long forgotten. I can guess that someone
here, perhaps a group, will respond to this post by asking me for
examples, by attacking me for over-generalizing, or for tarring
everyone, but I am not blaming any individual. I am upset with a
tendency that undermines the beneficial effect of reasoned advice and
disucssion by making it harder for those seeking it to find it amidst
the muck.

And I certainly hope that you will not take this post personally as it
is not really directed that way.
