Hi All

Below this is a repeat of a message I posted in early July,
which included that detail. The experiment I conducted
showed clearly that I needed the statin - which disappointed
me. My purpose in the experiment was to find a way to drop
it. I failed.

I felt that this totally non-blind experiment with subjects
n=1 may have provide some ideas for others:-)

In discussing this with my doc, and reading a lot (without
necessarily understanding it all) I believe there is a
strong genetic aspect to lipids components. There is no
doubt that our diet and lifestyle has a major effect, but
there are also some of us who have higher than average
trigs, or LDL, or HDL no matter what we do. I have a friend
with a HDL consistently over 2.2(85) and others who can't
seem to get above 0.6(23). So we do what we can - but the
more I read the more I believe that the doctors and
dieticians still have a very, very long way to go before
they can make blanket pronouncements for individuals.

Read that link I provided in the Triglycerides thread again
http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/77/5/1146. The only
thing that is totally clear is that they are just scratching
the surface.

I take lipitor because of fear of the unknown - yet I
suspect that my trigs and HDL are indicating that my fear is
unfounded.

You'll note that since then, my numbers have degraded
slightly, but not sufficient to cause me to change much in
my diet. I've increased exercise a little.

"A follow up on my lipitor/Pravachol experiment.

I tried three stages, first Pravachol 20mg, then I dropped
that in early February and tried CoQ10 and B12. Then, with
the bad results I had from that I reverted to lipitor20mg
but retained the CoQ10 and a B complex.

The latest results came in today; It's blindingly obvious
that I'll need lipitor or an equivalent from now on. But
it's also nice to know that it works after all that.

.................9-Feb.......04-Mar.....28-Apr.....28-Jun
med before test...lip.........prav.....Q10+B12..lip+q10+B12
Total.........4.8(185)....6.5(251)...8.5(328)...4.9(189)
Trigs..........0.9(80).....1.0(88)...1.4(124)...1.2(106)
HDL............1.3(50).....1.4(54)....1.4(54)....1.6(62)
LDL...........3.1(120)....4.6(178)...6.5(178)...2.7(104)
tr/HDL ratio..0.7(1.6)....0.7(1.6)...1.0(2.3)...0.8(1.8)

Many here have better numbers, but I'm happy with that LDL
when it's "balanced" by the low trigs and high HDL. So is
the doc. Not sure whether I still need the Co Q10 though.

And I still have bacon and egg for breakfast:-) "

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.
