"It's not your worry. I know plenty of diabetics who eat like this and
if I
try to give them advice they get angry. '
Unfortunately ingnorance about diabetes is rampant, even among
diabetics. In the US somewhat over half of all diabetics do not take
their pills, diet and/or exercise as instructed, however briefly, by
their doctors. Apparently you met one of them.
By offering her advice, you risk a negative reaction, perhaps even
anger. By not saying anything, you leave yourself wondering if there
was anything you could have done. Since you posted with the story, it
seems like it IS your worry.
A while back I found myself around a campfire subjected to one of the
most vicious, hateful, appallingly racist stories I had ever heard. I
wanted to say something, but didn't. I have always regretted it, not
just for the sake of the perpetrator but also because of everyone else
who just accepted that he could talk like that and nobody would object.
I think it is a lot easier to live with yourself if you say what needs
to be said. If you get met with anger, well that is really their
problem. But if you missed a chance to help someone who obviously
really needed it, then that is a problem for both of you.
There are plenty of people who would rather not get involved, who are
content with doing the best for themselves. You don't sound like one of
those people. And the world needs peope elike you to do what you can
when you can to whatever extent you feel able.
