Re: Dentist

I go twice a year to have my exam and cleaning. One year I was on a med
that made my mouth very dry and I sucked ice all the time. I think it was
the ice that made the difference. Rinsing the mouth after eating anything
would probably work, but maybe it was the crunching (softly) on the ice that
removed the tartar. I have a little brush thing that goes between my teeth
that I use once in a while instead of flossing. My teeth are very soft and
my gums recede to where they have to do little fillings at the base of the
tooth once in awhile so it is really important that I make my semi yearly
appointments. I make them use nitrous oxide on me because it's the only
high I ever get and I get so uptight that my blood pressure goes through the
roof whenever a person comes close to me.

| Last Tuesday I went on the annual pilgrimage to my favorite place -
| the Dentist. The dental hygienist bitched at me. She found an excess
| amount of calculus on my teeth. I googled for 'calculus and teeth'
| and found http://www.dent.ucla.edu/pic/members/plaque/. Nasty stuff.
| She and the dentist bitched at me for my never flossing. They moved
| me from a yearly visit to semi annual for cleaning and yearly for
| X-rays. The article mentions lipids in the saliva.
|
| It is known that certain people form calculus faster than others. The
| following factors increase the rate of calculus formation.
|
| 1. Elevated salivary pH.
| 2. Elevated salivary calcium concentration.
| 3. Elevated bacterial protein and lipid concentration.
| 4. Elevated concentration of protein and urea in submandibular
| salivary gland secretions.
| 5. Low individual inhibitory factors.
| 6. Higher total salivary lipid levels.
|
| The calculus on my lower front teeth were very visible. I don't
| remember ever seeing such an amount. I have a few questions for
| someone -
|
| 1. How can flossing remove calculus?
|
| 2. The 9/30 visit to the GP showed my total cholesterol increased to
| 197, the HDL/Trigs/LDL were midrange of the respective allowable
| range. With that and salivary lipids in mind, could the increase in
| total cholesterol be the reason for the excessive level of calculus on
| my teeth? I've been on an annual dental routine for as long as I can
| remember, and don't remember such an accumulation of calculus before.
| I'm wondering what caused the increase of calculus.
|
| 3. How many of you floss each day? I think flossing is a PITA and is
| a very gross procedure.
|
| 4. Do you have a problem with calculus accumulation?
|
| 5. In my case, semi annual for cleaning and annual for X-rays sounds
| like a good plan. Is it necessary to X-ray the teeth annually for us
| diabetics? Are you on a similar dental plan?
