Re: Packing for traveling: Anything I'm missing for my Diabetes?

I think I've got a handle on things now, but just wanted to run my
plans by the group in case I've missed something. Also, this might be
of interest to newbies.

OK, I'm driving to the ship, so airlines are not an issue on this
trip. Baggage handlers however are, as they will handle the suitcases
when boarding and disembarking the ship.

My two primary concerns are Meters and Medications. I'm thinking of
taking three meters: my main meter (accu-check compact) and two
one-touch ultras. I only have one vial of test strips for the ultras,
so I may need to buy some more (My insurance only pays for the
accu-check). I'm taking a total of 300 strips for my main meter.

My present plan is to have my main meter in my pocket or hand luggage,
with one backup in a suitcase, and one in my car. I'm not too worried
about if for the car trip because I can always walk into any pharmacy
and get a meter and strips, but at sea I won't have that option
(except in port, maybe).

For the meds (Metformin and Altace (ACE inhibitor)) I'm taking along a
two month's supply, leaving a few day's worth in my car, and splitting
the rest between suitcase and hand luggage, with a few day's worth in
a pocket carrier. I'm also taking scripts, leaving a copy in my car,
and one in each piece of luggage.

I do currently take flax seed oil capsules, so I'm taking a supply of
those, too. I also probably taking along a supply of Starlix for
occasional high-carb meals, but those are not an everyday item so I'm
not as concerned.

For food and beverages, I'm taking along some low-carb bread and
tortilla wraps. That way, if I end up with fast food my only choice
(possible en route), I can exchange the bun or bread for low carb.
They can also help round out regular meals if needed.

For beverages, I'm taking some crystal light and some iced tea mix for
the ship. I'll be taking some urine test strips to test fountain soft
drinks to make sure they are sugar free. (that's going to be a real
conversation piece at the formal dinners...:-)

OK, sound ok so far? Anything I've overlooked?
For critical supplies, we NEVER check anything on a plane. ALL meds and pump supplies go with us. Extras we'll pack in a suitcase, but never the stuff that MUST be there at the destination, without fail. I barely trust the airlines with my underwear; I'm not about to trust my medical stuff to them! You may never have lost luggage, but when you do, it'll make you a true believer in "useful paranoia".
