The article was very good I thought. Dealt with a T1 gentleman who was
compulsive abt having very tight control over his DM. The article stated
he would brag about his 5.7 A1C. His endo wasn't very impressed because
he feared he'd develop Hypo Unawareness. Well the guy was at the endo's
once and they did a finger stick... he tested a 32. The guy had no bearing he
was that low and felt fine. Though he was in serious danger zone. He didn't
listen to his endo about keeping his BG higher... then a few months later he
had a wake up call... he no longer was able to feel his lows and ended up
having a seizure. After that, his endo raised his BG target to 250 for several
weeks to allow his body to learn to feel the lows again. He complained about
feeling tired, having to pee and being thirsty... but was for his own good.
There's this hard-charging corporate exec. guy whose wife started coming to our DM support group meetings because her husband was having hypos and seizures in the office. She said he would become combative. She was worried about him and wanted advice.
Anyway, he was at the last meeting and tested 61. He says he's totally unaware of hypos but likes to stay close to the edge and has a 5.4 A1C. His wife always looks worried but he looks like he doesn't have a care in the world. He's very athletic and young looking. His wife will need a facelift soon to deal with the frown lines from constant anxiety.
