I have never seen such defensive people as those who are overweight. They are tied to their lifestyle, and don't want any advice that conflicts with it. Those who are not defensive, take the matter into their own hands, lose the weight, and suddenly discover a lifestyle that they had either forgotten about, or never experienced...
Cut your calories, increase your exercise, and you'll see just how good you feel! Why are you so against it???
Broad generalizations, such as the above, are almost never accurate. One of the mottos of this group is YMMV (Your Milage May Vary) for
that very reason.
What you say is quite true for SOME people, but not others. There are
people for whom the above does not work, just as some T2's can eat
certain foods that others can not.
I happen to be one of the ones for whom it does work. I've worked hard
since Dx to cut carbs, calories, and lose weight. And, yes, it's
helped. But that does not mean it is possible for everyone. YMMV.
Actually, it is TRUE that many in this group are too much into self pity to consider the alternative of LISTENING TO THEIR DOCTORS.
I certainly didn't listen to mine. I left the hospital with a low fat,
high carb diet *** and orders to try to lose ten pounds. I tossed
that diet pronto (the foods in it made my Bg's go sky high) and as for
the ten pounds, that was over 25 pounds ago.
Mary's point was that THEY ARE AGAINST cutting calories/exercise. THAT'S what her point was--that their ATTITUDES stink.
I've yet to see anyone here state that they are against diet and exercise.
You seem to be playing both sides of the street.
Nope, I'm just of the opinion that this whole argument stems largely
from the way certain positions were, probably inadvertently, phrased
by their original posters. It's human nature to generalize, but it can
cause problems in a debate, and IMHO it has here.
Lets try this: Here are a few statements. Does anyone on either side
disagree with them? (please, no one try interpreting someone else's
opinion here).
#1. Obesity increases the risk of Dm T2 in people genetically
predisposed to DM T2.
#2. The onset of Dm T2 can, for some people, cause obesity in
undiagnosed and thus BG uncontrolled individual.
#3 Diet, exercise, and weight loss are a good idea for an overweight
person (DM T2 especially).
Anyone object to any of the above statements?
On one hand you say exercise/diet works for you and then you make excuses for those who dismiss it out of hand.
That's somewhat of a mischaracterization of my position. It's true
that I do say that diet and exercise have worked for me (at least as
far as losing weight; Not sure about it's effect on my BG's). However,
I made excuses for no one. I merely stated that for some people this
does not work. I certainly have empathy for those who cannot lose
weight, as I fought, and failed, countless times myself. I'd have
surely failed again had I not been Dx'd for T2, and gotten my BG's
down.
God helps those who help themselves. sound familiar? Why enable the folks who insist that DM causes obesity. That's only a possibility; not an absolute.
I do not recall (someone please correct me if I'm in error) anyone saying that as an absolute?
I agree with your 3 items. .
