Sorry CeeBee -- bad spelling on my part. I meant "thrifty gene," not
"obesity gene." It's GREAT to have in a hunter-gatherer or subsistance
agrarian economy that is subject to famine, because you sock on the fat
in times of relative plenty and don't die as easily of starvation in
times of want. However, with times of not just plenty but positivie
overabundance just a hop, skip and drive away at the quickie market,
palace di deep fried fat or whatever, and relative market insulation
from food underproduction (thank you global economy), the ol' thrifty
gene becomes, er, maladaptive. At least that's the theory as I've come
across it.
