Dear David:
Hi there! It's so, so, so incredibly nice to meet someone who knows
everything there is to know about what happens when the leptin meets
the mitochondria. Would you care to explain all that to, say, someone
so learning-disabled their only career option is clinical practice in
Endocrinology? How about Francine Kaufman -- former president of the
American Diabetes Association who, in her recent book "Diabesity"
specifically states that obesity doesn't cause diabetes. Oh yeah,
they're related, statistically, and obesity certainly is a risk factor
for diabetes (she's clear about that), but somehow, Dr. Kaufman feels
the science is inadequate to support a wholesale positive assertion
that being fat causes DM.
I think I'll go with the more nuanced, subtle, complex idea there's
a "thrity gene" out there, and oh yeah, in me, that is related to both
developing diabetes and being obese in an interrelated way. I
personally feel that complexity is more valuable in understanding how
things work.
But, it's great to meet someone over the internet who knows all.
Let's keep it a meeting over the internet.
Toodles.
