Re: Dr. Nortin M. Hadler

No Mack - There is some merit in these opinions.

1) There is little doubt that bypass surgery is WAY overdone. The question is what is the difference between necessary and unnecessary. However comparison of Medicare areas with high bypass rates show HIGHER mortality than those with low bypass rates.

2) I is generally accepted now that5 MOST (not all) prostate cancer should not be treated agressivly. Many experts now believe that PSA tests are more likely to result in unnecessary surgery than necessary surgery

3) There are serious questions about how one SHOULD test for breast cancer - questions, no answers I know of as yet

4) Chronic pain us a complex subject. Not all pain is alike, and drugs often do not work as well as other methods. Many pain specialists are psychiatrists. It is all in how we deal with it. I am talking about REAL pain, not somitization.

This has been bothering me ever since I read his opinions in Discover Magazine. The article was an interview with Dr. Nortin M. Hadler. Among the points he makes are;

a.. Heart bypass surgery: Usually a waste of money, time and energy
a.. Treatment for prostate cancer: Does more harm than good
a.. Testing for breast cancer: Not always effective
a.. Chronic pain: See your therapist, not your pharmacist

Add to that his statement that he believes cholesterol screening is pointless and statins only serve to put money in the pockets of big pharma. (My specific area of concern)

Here is a short version of the Discover piece. http://www.discover.com/issues/jun-05/departments/discover-dialogue/

Has this been discussed before? So far I can't find the JAMA article he is said to have written, or any other cite that I think I would trust.

he sounds like someone I would slap then fire if he were my doctor.
