I'll do some searching tonight and see if I can find anything about the effects of greater weight loss, such as to optimum, or below.
There's been some recent research that implies that recovery from heart attacks and cancers is improved if you're a bit overweight, rather than normal or greatly overweight. Besides, weight may not be the best measure, especially once you can get your exercise routine up to full whack. Try these: http://www.he.net/~zone/prothd2.html
Hmmm, either I'm doing something wrong, or my body consists of 111%
fat.
Ahhh, ok, I did goof: the height needs to be entered in inches! That
produces 17%, which is much better IMHO than consisting of 111% fat.
It's above the recommended 15%, but not as much as I thought.
BMI does not work if you are built big. My son played college football and was measured at 16% body fat which is normal for a male, but the BMI put him into the "obese" category, because he had enormous arms and legs (muscle, not fat). They added a lot of weight.
I got my body fat analysis done at the Y and it put me into a "fitness" category which I was told was very good. At the same time, I was only 1 lb under the BMI limit for normal. That's because for females, the BMI fails to differentiate between someone who weighs 130 and is flat chested and someone at the same weight who is carrying 10 lbs on their chest. There's also the same issue of build.
I have found the online calculators to be completely useless. They told me I was 22% fat at the time when I still had 15 lbs to go to get to that body fat percentage.
