Diet, testing, and DA

Hi All

I'll pass this on with just the facts. I think my bias is
fairly well known. My only comment is that this, and my next
post, go some way towards explaining my attitude to Diabetes
Australia dietary advice. DA is, as far as I can tell,
totally in agreement with the ADA.

At my local DA support meeting this week I was given a
booklet. It was an insert from a local magazine titled
"Living well with diabetes". It isn't an official DA
publication. However, the "about the author" section says:

"Carole Webster is the National Publications manager of
Diabetes Australia
<more background snipped>
and is on the editorial board of the national (Diabetes
Australia) magazine 'Conquest', and has had an active role
in it's steady growth. She is married with three adult
daughters, the youngest of whom has had type 1 diabetes
since age two".

So, I would suggest that she is very likely to be reflecting
the views of DA. I applaud her for her dedication to a
worthy organisation. It is a comprehensive booklet, covering
both types. I won't go into all of it here, just an excerpt
on testing and part of a seven-day menu planner.

Under the heading "How often should I test" is:
People with type 2 diabetes test once or twice a day, or as
directed. Suggested times to choose from are before
breakfast, two hours after a meal, and before bed. Once your
diabetes is stable, it may be reduced to one or two tests a
day, two or three times a week.

The next heading, to give the mind-set, is "Why do you need
to test so often".

The suggested menu has no differentiation, implying that the
menu is suited for both types.

What follows is just Sunday and Monday. The other days are
similar or higher carb. When I worked out the carb count (it
wasn't included) I underestimated whenever it was in doubt
