We test for a "reason" and that reason is information.
You may eat and drink as you wish; just integrate that eating and drinking
into the information that you seek by testing. For most of us, the
information we seek is "how did the food content of that last meal affect my
blood sugar?" You use that information to plan future meals.
You may also acquire the information "how did the food content of that last
meal + a cup of black coffee one hour later affect my blood sugar?"
Actually, both pieces of information could be valuable even though the
information might be "coffee doesn't do anything". Or it might be that
"caffeine raises bG, de-caff doesn't"
In general, zero-carb drinks have little effect on bG except that their
presence in your stomach may slow digestion and thus slightly suppress an
after-meal bG peak.
Zero-carb foods tend to have more of a suppression effect. Fat seems to
have the most effect for me.
However, something to think about: High, high bulk and fiber may delay
the bG peak for several hours. Yesterday, my 2-hour was 109, my 4-hour
was sky-high.
