The last few Thanksgivings in our household have had kitchen
mishaps - enough to make DH and me wonder, and even try to outwit
fate this year - to no avail. A short run down, an oh how I and our
finances wish these were made up...

2003 -"Helpful" guest plugs in electric front burner while turning
it on (we have a jenn-aire (25 years old now but I LOVE it)) blows
up that burner and disables it in that cartridge. The noise, spark
and scream - aftwards - were amusing (after we knew that the guest
was unharmed)...

2004 - Hinges on oven door break just as turkey is coming out of
said oven - a 20 lb bird can pick up some serious speed skidding
across a kitchen floor! Got a new oven door out of that.

(the floor had been scrubbed the day before in prep for company and
we did rinse off the bird. Only had 2 witnesses but they were
laughing so hard the rest of group got what happened out 'em. No
leftovers, so it didn't seem to hurt anyone's appetite).

2005 - In the morning, doing a load of laundry - we have a laundry
closet that opens to the eating area of the kitchen - washing
machine basket, with no warning signs and of course full of water,
gave way and completely flooded kitchen 4 hours before guests.
Moved the turkey to an old 1950's GE roaster my grandmother used to
roast the bird in, the microwave and toaster oven to the wet bar in
the family room to cook the dinner. Grill was fired up on deck to
make use of burners - great until ran out of lp gas, of course. Got
a new kitchen floor out of that. DH, frugal as ever actually
replaced the basket on the wm which lasted another 6 months - when
it AND the dryer bit the dust, but hey it wasn't on Thanksgiving
DAY...

2006 - DH decided to do the deep fried turkey. Yep. Comes in handy
to have 3 firefighters in family. 1 captain and 2 lieutenants. Darn
good thing they tested the fire extinguishers beforehand. Got a new
deck out of that.

2007 - Mom took my Royal Doulton Stoneware (discontinued pattern,
wedding present) coffee server and placed it, empty, on stovetop
burner - clearly stamped on bottom not to do that - *it*
exploded...kaboom!. No one was near it (or had noticed that she had
done that). Thankfully no was injured in the kablowy or by the
shards of stoneware that it seemed like it took weeks to get it all
cleaned up. DH searched and several years later and found it
on-line along with a few other pieces, an individual in New Zealand
and replaced it. Sadly, that was the beginning of a number of
"incidents" with my Mom, she has responded well to treatment.

2008 - My daughter who grew up in this house and was well aware of
the "limitations" of the garbage disposal, decided to make sweet
potato fries and peeled 10 lbs (no, I have no idea why 10 lbs) of
potatoes, then threw 3 banana peels, 3 bunches of celery tops
(again I have no clue) and a few other items THEN turned on the
disposal which, before seizing up and dying it heaved up this awful
mess and spewed it about the cooking area of the kitchen...ugh,
ick! Gotta say, daughter (and her hubby) are GREAT at cleaning up!
The sweet potato fries unfortunately didn't turn out, but we sure
had a heck of a lot of 'em! Got a new disposal out of that - and
one that'll grind up bricks, goodness forbid that I should ever
need to do that (altho I admit back in my early cooking days I
baked some brownies that could've easily been mistaken for bricks).

So, this year - we thought, we'll beat this curse, because of a
variety things going on it would be just me and DH on Turkey Day. We
planned nuthin. I mean n o t h i n g. Day went well until 6 pm -
when the faucet in the kitchen decided to go and flood underneath
the sink. Sigh. Just got done ordering the new faucet on-line. HAD
to happen ON Thanksgiving. Something about this day...

I'm going to bed

ROLF! Sorry to laugh, but you could use this as one of those crazy
emails
people forward.

Maybe you should just go out for Thanksgiving next year?

Aloha!

Wow Happy. That isn't just a "few years" worth as you stated, that's a
total of 6 years in a row! I have no idea or suggestions for you
except to consider what a disaster it could be if you took Carols'
advice and "went out next Thanksgiving"!

Just what may or might happen if you went out next year and left your
"jinxed" kitchen/house vacant. Imagine how much more of a disaster it
could have been if you guys weren't home when the faucet decided to
"blow"? It could be like a cartoon where you notice a little water at
the foot of the door just before opening it and when you do, whoosh! A
wall of water comes flooding out all at once and doesn't stop! I
think I'd be wary of leaving the place empty on Thanksgiving of all
days. Any other day, yes. Thanksgiving, no.

Oh Carol??? You made me laugh when you stated in your post: "ROLF!
Sorry to laugh, but you could use this as one of those crazy emails

ROLF??? Rolling on laugh, flooring????? Why that strikes me as so
funny, I don't know. It HAS been a long day with my weird new feelings
and my wife?s sudden illness with all the food preparation.

Oooops! I interposed the "L" between the "O" and the "F", instead of placing
it after the "F". I was having a bad keyboarding night as it is.

Kind of tired on the inside, however, as usual at this time of night,
a particular med I take has me going strong for at least 6-8 more
hours tonight. I hope some members are around later or I'll wind up
playing computer video games for hours if pain lets me.

Hopefully for you Happy, you'll have wonderful dreams tonight to make
up for it. Stay as well as you can.

Aloha for now,
Hawaiian Wayne
