Evenin' Folks-
Oye, I am absolutely goin' through it with my laptop.
I currently have it running, but am unconvinced it'll stay that way.
Hopefully one of us CPers is a techie, LOL.
Well, I offered to help Lynn out with her issues, but she never took me up
on it. Not a techie, just a do-it-yourselfer. But when I offered Lynn help.
ZW posted that he would help, if she would post what her issues where, and
mentioned that he and Juba ate both IT professional, and that bewteen the
two of them, they could probably help her resolve her issues.
I will start with the more recent events. A few weeks ago my computer
failed to get goin' when I turned it on one morning. Closer inspection
revealed that the screen was in fact not completely black. I did the
old flashlight trick.
Unfortunately I also did many restarts and abrupt shutoffs in the
process of realizing the screen was just dim, not completely out. It
originally appeared that the normal dell startup screen would load
then it dimmed to dark as it went into windows startup.
I tried system restore and met with the no valid restore point. Messed
around and got it up, but not consistently. I also virus, spyware and
keylogger scanned without permanent results.
After checking some techie forum threads I decided the likely culprit
was the inverter. Waited a week for it to show up. Got it in and
wallah, nothing!
I proceeded to try multiple online troubleshooting guides. I scanned
for everything again. I attempted system restore again.
I started getting really stressed because my computer is like my
lifeline in these painful times. Using someone else's is such a hassle
because of chronic pain. Sitting in an unusaul chair can be murder on
me.
This definitely has got me feelin' down. I was tryin' to hold of
wiping the computer for fear of losing my stuff. Wiping is a last
option of course before taking it to an expensive repair shop.
I know if it's the video cord, backlight or anything involved it'll
have to be taken in.
I had a tough time getting my pictures & documents saved to disk. I
was starting to freak that they may be lost, mostly the photos, of
course. Fortunately I was able to get everything saved to disk just
tonight.
Anyhoo, I then decided to try my husband's powercord to his laptop on
mine. I was floored when it worked! I ordered a replacement for mine
right away.
I shut my computer down and was unable to get it up again.
Today the new power cord comes. I have not had any luck, so I think,
"What the heck?" I plug it in and whadda ya know; It works!
I am very glad that I've now gotten my stuff to disk.
I haven't been successful in getting the computer to back itself up
during this session.
This computer repair shops here are always pricey and I am concerned
that since Dell quickly discontinued this model due to being so
fatally flawed that it will never quit being a 'nickel and dime'ing
piece of equipment.
This computer during the duration of it's life has eaten a couple
batteries and this will be my 3rd cord. Now both the keyboard and
inverter have been replaced. It's been worked on a couple times
Conversely, who in the hell can afford a new laptop in this financial
climate?
Mostly, it is such a damn pain to have to deal with. Having access to
the support is paramount to me, but shizz man...

Well, I definitely can't help you with it, as you have a Dell from Hell. I
hate Dells, they make it so that you have to call the Dell Dude tech support
(which means paying a lot of $$$$$$$'sssss). Now, if you had a Compaq/HP, I
would have searched the online knowledge library, which is what I do for my
current Compaq, did for the previous one, and fixed two other Compaqs for
their owners. A lot of times, there were hardware/software issues. Acer has
a fairly nice tech section, I was able to resolve a software isuue on my
Moms netbook by going there. Sadly, Dell just won't provide any easy-access
tech info. For that reason, I will never own a Dell
If you are able to get booted up, you might want to have a peek at Device
Manager in Windows, and see if there is something mallfunctioning showing up
in there. If there are problems, you usually see yellow exclamation points
or question marks after the device name. Device Manager can help you
pinpoint a specific device, and whether it's the hardware, or a software
upgrade is needed. If you don't know what you are doing in there, and you
see the yellow signs I mentioned, you can post what you saw and ask someone
what you should try.
Do you use your laptop for anything that you would need anything other that
perhaps a printer and cd-rom/cd-rw? Netbooks come in at under $300, and an
external cd drive would be around $50 or less. The Acer Aspire One has a 160
GB hard drive, not the small flash drives many have. Just a though if you
are looking to replace your laptop. You can always buy a factory refurb or
factory recertified. You can get one like new for half the price. Just don't
buy a Dell. :-)
