If the Federal Government can trample political activism by
threats and fines and get away with it, then there is no rule of law
left in this country.
Likewise, if people think they can ignore a subpoena and get away
with it, then there is no rule of law
left in this country.
Siobhan Reynolds should have handed over the materials demanded and
continued the fight for justice in the courts. By holding out, she is
handing the prosecutor exactly what he/she wants.
Now, more than ever, PRN needs your support. Money donated to PRN
will be used to pay PRN's fines
That does not seem like a wise investment. Use the money on lawyers,
not fines.
made no mention of why she was fined or what the case she is appealing
is even about?
What documents is the Government seeking?
Yeah I know I could do a web search, but you seem to know what's -
what on this issue.
She is being investigated for obstruction of justice because of her
"advocacy work for a local physician accused of writing inappropriate
painkiller prescriptions." She says the prosecutor has no case and was
just trying to silence her. A judge ruled against her and ordered her to
turn over certain documents or pay a fine of $200 per day.
The subpoenas appear to be a politically motivated fishing expedition by
an out of control prosecutor, but my point is you have to know when to
pick your battles. This could take several years to litigate and the
fines will continue while that goes on. If Ms. Reynolds is in as much
danger as she claims in her fundraising appeals, then perhaps she should
conduct a strategic withdrawl on this particular point and continue the
battle in the courts.
I would also argue that this battle is an expensive side-show that
detracts from the mission of Pain Relief Network.
