Fighting Depression

Hey guys, I'm just here trolling for some helpful hints on how you deal with
depression. I'm having a hard time of it just now, and it's not *just*
physical/medical/chemical.

After all of our lives having never paid a single bill late, in this last
year, after 5 years of dealing with one financial disaster after another,
we've hit rock bottom. We were in court Tuesday claiming bankruptcy.
Gawds, it's hard to even write that down - embarrassing, discouraging and
hurtful to the point that I can't stop crying even at my desk at work.

DH lost his job months ago and hasn't even had a call for an interview much
less a job offer in all that time. The bankruptcy isn't going to help him
get a job - every potential employer now-a-days does a background check and
that almost always is a reason for rejection. For that matter, since my
company has recently announced a merger with another large company, I may be
in the same boat by the end of the year (why do lay-offs always happen just
before Christmas?).

Life itself just seems so cruel to me in every way. I don't watch the news
because of that, but real life just hits me in the face with cruelties every
single day. For instance...

We feed two little stray cats who live in our back yard, safe behind our 6
foot wooden fence from dogs, cars, and mean children. One little fellow,
Smokie, has a hurt front leg - we think it's either a birth defect of the
result of an accident that happened a long time ago since he had it when he
first came to us about 6 or 8 months ago. It breaks my heart to see him
limping around and jumping up on his good front foot to rub his head against
my husband's leg when he's bringing out the food dish.

Another young fellow, Tiger, seems very sickly, he's always just laying next
to the door and he pants a lot. He only shows interest in life when the
food arrives twice a day. I have a feeling it may be Feline Leukemia.

I would LOVE to take them both to the vet to have them diagnosed and fixed
(both kinds of fixed), but we can't even afford to have any of our 5 house
cats vetted (we think Archer may have a bladder or kidney infection since
he's been peeing outside his box so much).

Neither cat is feral, so I know that they got here because someone
deliberately "threw them away" - they didn't even have balls enough to take
them to the pound for euthanasia, they just decided to let them die a
horrible death on the street from (pick one) starvation, ravaged by dogs,
hit by a car, set on fire by delinquents, catch a fatal disease, etc. How
can anyone with any kind of a conscience do such a thing and still sleep at
night?

Gawds, have you even hurt so much that your breath catches in your throat
and make your chest heave? How the heck can I "act normal" at work before
I'm kicked out the door for being a kook?
