I've read a little more of your/Schmendrik's blog and noted that you
mentioned reading science fiction as a teenager. Do you still read
science
fiction? I'm a die-hard scifi fan myself and have noted that quite a few
people who are owned by cats also seem to love it. Maybe it's the
knowledge
that we are being taken over and ruled by other-worldly, more
intelligent
beings (commonly mistaken by most humans to be only lowly animals of the
feline persuasion) that makes us so open to stories about aliens.

There are also a few scifi fans in this group as well - we started a
thread
about it quite a while ago but, maybe because of the meds (nah - that's
just
an excuse), I don't remember names well, so they'll have to pop in and
introduce themselves (come out of the closet guys! ;>). Stan McCann is
also a scifi fan if I remember correctly, but I haven't seen Stan post
here
in a while.

Anyway, if you want to talk scifi, I'm your girl!

My favorite authors are Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Spider Robinson,
Robert Asprin, Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, James Blish, Robert Bloch,
Ben
Bova, David Brin, Orson Scott Card, Harlan Ellison, Alan Dean Foster,
Robert
L. Forward, Frank Hebert, Dean Ing, Ursula K. Le Guin, Anne MacCaffrey,
Vonda McIntyre, and Larry Niven.

I like "hard" science fiction (with the emphasis on "science") - like
Robert
L. Forward writes. My favorite authors are also scientists and use valid
scientific theories on which to base their stories. I'm not too crazy
about
the current trend in scifi towards fantasy rather than hard science - I
can't "get into" the sword and sorcery stuff, I'd rather read stuff that
might possibly happen in our future.

So, to bring this back on topic, one of the ways I use to escape the
constant pain is to bury myself in a good, thick scifi novel. Being able
to
hop on the next ship to Alpha Centauri is great way to get out of this
frail
and hurting body and see the universe and have terrific adventures in a
number of possible futures! ;>

Cat Nipped,

I know this mssg isn't for me Just wanted to say I'm a Sc Fi &
fantasy fan also don't what you'd call this genre I think it's my
favorite; Terry Prachett's, Disc World (all of Terry Prachett's works)
and Douglas Adam's Hitchiker....I started off as a kid and read all 14
Oz books while that ins't Sci Fi it got me headed in that direction

Lynn, this message was for anyone who wanted to read and reply. I wouldn't
have posted it if I had not wanted others in the group to chime in. So
you're very much welcome to join the discussion.

I don't know about the Oz books, but I think Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker
series would be classified as scifi - but with the broader brush of satire
(as was Jonathan Swift's writing).

I'd rather the "hard" scifi myself, but that's just me. I like to "escape"
into the world of "might be" rather than complete unreality.

BTW, I saw your post in rpch+b - your daughter's posts there also - about
clipping a cat's paws. I would agree with the poster who recommended
giving
treats immediately afterwards. I have one cat who *strongly* objects to
having her claws clipped, but she will endure the humiliation of having
her
weapons disarmed if she gets lots of treats afterwards.

I don't visit rpch+b much any more, but I used to be a regular there (but
it
got too harsh for me with its flamewars and criticisms by some of the more
fanatic cat lovers there). Have you ever posted on rpca?

I use the cat behav nwsgrop on & off as needed, also am a lurker
because there's a lot to be learned there, I'm not sure what the rpca
is, has to be abt cats I take it : )  I love animals in general though

========================
Long, long ago, back in the stone age of the internet, there used to be a
newsgroup called "rec.pets.cats".  It was a VERY prolific newsgroup.  There
were people there who only wanted to talk about serious stuff like cats'
health and nutrition, people who wanted to just talk about their cats and
share stories about cats, people who did cat rescue who wanted to share
resources, etc.

However, some people got into the habit of posting to the group as if they
*were* their cats.  They used "cat speak" (i.e. "baby talk") - the kind of
verbiage you see on the internet phenomenon "LOL cats" as seen at the "I can
has cheezburger" site (http://www.icanhascheezburger.com- bet you didn't
know that's where the phenomenon got started!).  Most of us just ignored
those posts, but to some they were really, really annoying (and some of us
who didn't complain still thought that if cats could speak they certainly
wouldn't use baby-talk since they are obviously *much* more intelligent than
the people they owned).  So as more and more people used "cat speak", more
and more people became annoyed by it.  The "cat speakers" just got more and
more prolific and there were huge flamewars about it.

Even though we had those terrible arguments, the people in the group were
still pretty close and had been friends for quite a while.  So what we
decided to do was to split up the group into a bunch of sub-groups.  So we
started the groups rec.pets.cats.health+behav, rec.pets.cats.rescue,
rec.pets.cats.announce, rec.pets.cats.misc, rec.pets.cats.community (the
group specifically for the "cat speakers"), and rec.pets.cats.anecdotes.
Rpca is the group I was referring to.  It's still a very, very close-knit
group, but not nearly as much as it used to be.  It has its own culture,
phrases, acronyms and customs.  It was also the "nice" cat group - everyone
there was very supportive of one another and didn't like to see fights among
the group members.  We developed a very unique and amazingly effective way
to deal with "trolls" - we would "recipe" them.  In other words, instead of
cursing the troll and starting huge flamewars (exactly what trolls want to
happen), we would instead post recipes in response to the trolls.  We called
it a "troll-b-que" - and basically used the trolling post as a means to
trade favorite dishes (food is never off-topic in that group).  The trolls
didn't know what to make of it, but they knew they weren't getting the
response they wanted so they would give up trying to stir sh*t and just go
away.  Problem solved.

I think cats *are* more affectionate and loyal than other pets.  They will
go to amazing lengths to be with their humans, through thick and thin.

as far as newsgroups go I started out using ASD or
alt.support.depression...they too split into 3 groups and it used to
be very supportive and close, now like many other newsgrps a few big
time trouble makers & tons of spam
