I know OG has said several times that you should not give your medication
away even to a pharmacy or doctor. However, after I've gone a week with
break-through pain keeping me weeping at my desk, I called my doctor a third
time this week. The doctors were both out but the nurse told me to take 2
4mg Oxycodone HCL every 4 to 6 hours up to 18 pills a day (it was prescribed
as 1 4mg every 4 to 6 hours up to 6 pills a day). She said to come in on
Monday and that I'll have to bring in all the Oxycodone I have left and they
would write me a prescription for Dilaudid (she didn't say what dosage).
What should I do if the doctor won't write me a new prescription without my
giving him my pills? Should I be pushy and ask to see them flushed?

Dear Cat,
No need to be pushy. You are as concerned about the diversion of
presrciption drugs as they are and would like to see them destroyed as
well as have some documentation in case someone sees that the
accounting is odd for this month. Doctors and patients are/should be
all together in this effort and cover each others asses. You also
never know when someone is going to want documentation (somebody like
your pharmascist or insurance. The chances of direct questioning by
DEA of law enforcement is pretty small, but those guys are more likely
to ask than not) so you should get something from them on their final
disposition.
You mentioned that this med is the 4mg oxycodone. Are you sure you got
the right drug? You said you were taking dilaudid 4mg which is
hydromorphone generically. Get them straight, it's important, as they
do make an 8mg hydromorphone (the generic dilaudid one) tablet, so
your insurance won't have to buy as many if you're taking 4mg tablets
2 at a time.
As always, just be up front--og
