Dear Friends,
Well, it looks like here we go again, the yearly tradition of being crushed
under the boot heel of old man winter. Between the terror of the family get
togethers and the endless non stop repetition of "how are you feeling" at
every turn, we have to somehow scrape enough dough together to find gifts
(even if it's at the dollar store) and pretend to be ecstatic when you get
your usual gift wrapped box of rocks. Add the frigid temperatures that
already have your body as stiffly cramped as the strings of a tennis racket,
nibble at enough crap so as not too appear anti social, and it's almost
enough to make you dose the koolade.
I know I can't be the only one that hates this fake "Peace on Earth, Good
will towards men (as long as they aren't ahead of you in line at the store)"
bullshit. Nobody gives a damn about anyone but themselves, and this tear is
going to be no different than the years before. You guys know I don't
usually use this place to whine, so I'll try and wrap it up. If you're out
having a holiday drink (usually against your doctors orders), take a second
and give me a thought, and know if I was there right next to you, the drink
would be on me (providing it was a cheap draft beer)
All right, done for now, but I reserve the right to bitch additionally as
needed while the "holiday" season progresses.
Humbug, my friends! Pure unadulterated Humbug--og
Aloha O.G., My Friend!
You don't have to "reserve the right bitch additionally as needed
while the "holiday" season progresses." You are one of the privileged
few here that pretty much can do and say whatever the hell you feel
like without retribution from anyone. In addition to that, if anyone
should give you any shit, just know that the majority of the people in
this group are grateful folks that you have helped in more ways than
just one (usually, they would soon realize that YOU are one person
here that has an "invisible army of supporters" and also realize what
a huge mistake they just made by doing so. The hard work and the
"personal touch" you somehow manage to put on your posts when dealing
with us as individuals is something that most of us simply quietly
appreciate and never really acknowledge.
So OG, you just come on here and vent your "holiday blues" away
whenever you damn well feel like it.
I know I'm going to sound like a real "cream puff or milquetoast" when
I say this, but you all have to remember that we all feel "Winter"
temperatures in a relative manner. Before I moved here from Minnesota
almost 20 years ago, we (my family) usually didn't give temperatures
of 20 BELOW at night and highs of ZERO during the day for January and
February much thought. Those are pretty common for that region. Now
that all of us are "acclimatized" to Hawaiian weather, when it gets
down to 59 or lower at night (60 is our "freezing point" over here!)
and 75 for the high during the day, we ALL have to break out the
sweatshirts and/or sweaters, put those nice heavy quilts on the beds!!
Go ahead and laugh...I really DO understand. I STILL chuckle about
it, myself. Another odd thing about the winters here. Even though we
break out the warmer "tops" and bedding, everyone will STILL wear
shorts with them. There's something about living the "Aloha Life" that
makes us refuse to let the weather "make" us do or wear something we
really don't want to.
Sorry O.G., I don't experience the same "dreads" that you do during
the winters and the "holidays" for several reasons other than the
weather, of course. Not having family close by or even within "driving
distance" (heh-heh), we used to send touristy type gifts to ALL the
relatives, which they literally LOVED for the first few years. Then
for some reason, not only did they stop sending gifts to us, they
didn't even acknowledge the ones WE sent to THEM. Without the snow
for a "white Christmas" that we were very used to, they are not only
BROWN but they could be "Christmases in July"! A lot of the "spirit"
that my family got depended on things like that. It REALLY makes a big
difference for us.
When I was healthy (ah, the 'good ol' days'...sniff...), I remember
sitting on the warm beach basking in the warm sun when it was January
and February and wondering just how COLD it was back in the old "upper
Midwest" part of the mainland and suddenly realizing I had a nasty
little "shit-eating-grin" on my face. So OG? I CAN remember and get
deeply into my memories of those last few days of "FALL" where I was
filled with a bit of the dread and "winter blues" (which, by the way,
is a REAL phenomenon) and feel all the what's and why's for your
feelings of a "darker color". Just don't let those annual blues go any
further (or is it 'farther') then what is within the "normal" range,
OK?
As you know, being below the normal range on the depression/bluesy
scale is the reason for my extended "medical leave". So to speak...
I've somehow been managing to keep my "range" just barely an "RCH"
above that point of falling into what some say is the "deep, dark
bottomless pit" of near-hell. I made a solemn commitment to
participate and help at least 2 people a week here. OR, at least TRY
to. LOLOL!!
Keep your head above the water my friend. Remember that you are really
appreciated around here.
Aloha Just For Now,
Hawaiian Wayne
