Non-NSAIDs for arthritis?

I got hit with a double-whammy this past week; what my clinic doctors
thought was some weird neuropathy turns out to be garden variety
arthritis, but affecting pretty much every joint in my body, and I'm in
stage 3 CKD, so I can't take NSAIDs any more.
They've been feeding me gabapentin, which can be somewhat effective
against the pain, but at any effective dose, it makes me stupid, so I
really need to start taking something else.
I was told to see one of my HMO's rheumatologists to figure out what I
can take for the pain, but the soonest I can see one is almost a month
out.
In the meantime, I'd like to do my own research on what's available so
I'll have a better chance of having a useful conversation at the
upcoming appointment.
What sort of drugs are likely to be suggested?
I still need to keep working; my job is of a "creative" sort and I need
to keep my wits about me, so I'd really like to avoid narcotics and
certainly don't want to keep shoveling down the gabapentin.
