Time Warner will/has discontinued news-server support?

Yup. It's already been done.

Others have as well. MSN dropped their Usenet Service long ago. Some
providers also decide to not carry any of the alt.warez groups, such as
my provider Cox did since its inception. The service is also throttled
& not very well maintained. I think it is almost an after thought.

That's not
saving $: it's simply denying an important service,

A service that costs them quite a bit of money; for news servers,
support personnel, etc, but is only used by a very small percentage of
their customers.

It isn't an important service. To many other forms have surpassed
Usenet's viability & cost structure. It is silly to post one binary and
have it replicated millions of times over on every Usenet Server
throughout the world when it can be post on just one website.

forums, which are similar to the old BBS & usually one-topic centric.
Using software froimhttp://www.ektron.com/I actually run one out of my
house. No biggie-da.

There is even a basic tempplate
@http://www.ektron.com/cms400-starter-sites.aspxall they way down at
the bottom of the page for a "Community Center".

likely b/c
the figger it's too much trouble for many of their users to change
ISP's. I know I'd seek to drop such an ISP in a Bankok picosecond.

Except that when it comes to broadband (in my city at least) the
choice is between one cable company and one DSL company. In other
words, no real choice. That's the same in most other localities.

I really don't know of any other "residental" full package Broadband
Services other then Cable & DSL. Even then, some of those service
actually out-source their Usenet to places like Giganews as to not have
to put up with the headache of maintaining NNTP Servers & storage.

I still say the news groups that were using "News" as fronts for their
pay-per month PIRACY groups are a major part of the reasons so many
outfits are dropping all of the groups. Who needs that kind of
liability? I was on a bit torrent information site just the other day
and many people were talking about their favorite"News Group" that they
used to download many many gigs of copyrighted material per month were
suddenly shut down. For years some people thought the News Groups were a
safe haven from the RIAA and MPAA etc... But all of sudden there
disappearing faster than the file sharers of the past. So we have all of
these different kinds of "groups" being shut down all at the same
time... hmm food for thought.

Understood. Piracy is an important issue and a possible liability for any
ISP that allows copyrighted material on their servers. But you seem to
miss the point that there was no need to stop carrying all newsgroups when
they could have easily eliminated access to all binary groups (those that
allow file attachments to messages)and kept the text-only groups. That is
all within the power of each individual ISP because they control what is
stored on their news servers. Not carrying binary groups would have
eliminated their immediate legal problems and cut their expenses for
providing newsgroup access -- probably by at least 2/3.

What I don't understand is why people think it cost so much to provide
NEWSGROUPS. The servers are nothing more than a piece of software. The
last one I ran cost about $400. Spend s few bucks on a computer with
adequate storage space, setup the software which is not hard, and let it
run.
