I have been on the fentanyl 75 mg patch for 2 months now for chronic
back pain. My back issues are now over and I want to get off this
stuff. My doctor suggested I go in the hospital but I am unable to do
that and make a living, therefore she suggested a slow wean. She
wrote me out 50 mg patches for a one month supply then 25 mg patches
for a month. Is this going to work? I am scared to death of the
withdrawel, especially after reading various horror stories on the
internet. Does anyone know if weaning off in this manner is effective
or perhaps some other way would be better.
Howdy, Whiskey!
I've weaned and withdrawn off of Fentanyl a few times. Weaning is waaay
easier. It isn't that bad, especially when you wean with the time frame
you have. My guess is you won't even feel any symptoms....might be a bit
edgy the first few days you start with the lower dose...be ready for that,
and warn your spouse.
Even if you had to quit cold turkey (which i've had to do twice) Fentanyl is
not that horrid a withdrawal physically. I found it messed up my mind much
more than my body. But weaning, and doing so over a few months, you'll
barely notice any difference.
Don't let those withdrawal stories freak you. Those are basically cold
turkey situations. And, yep, it's no fun, but not a horror show.
I sure hope your back pain doesn't show up again!
deep peace,
Lavon
