My colonoscopy was performed with conscious sedation. I am not sure
exactly what drugs were used or if an anesthesiologist was involved. I
know Versed was used for sure but propofol might have been added to
the cocktail. I do not remember any pain yet I know I was able to
follow instructions given me by the doctor. Done right, conscious
sedation can be as effective as full blown unconscious sedation. We
are not all the same so options need to be available at the doctor's
discretion for people with a history of bad reactions to conscious
sedation.

I just had one done here in Canada about a week and half ago. I was
not at first happy as I knew they were only going to do it using Versed,
which in previous "procedures" had not proved very effective (mostly
though it was a case of the nurse, etc. not cranking it up enough, nor
knowing my history of high tolerance to opiates, etc.).
I was pleasently surprised though, everything went very well,
including 4 or 5 biopsy's. No real pain, very little discomfort, and I
suspect that something other than just the Versed was used. They
slipped a small "breather" over my nostrils, and I mumbled to the
nurse "Is that oxygen", and she said "no".. In the consent form, they
stated that they also use Fentanyl. I suspect maybe the Fentanyl was
in gas form. Anyway, considering it was a conscious sedation, it
went very well. At the very end of the procedure, they did knock me
out for a brief time as I don't remember leaving the surgury, and woke
up in recovery, so I think they might have cranked things up for a minute
to maybe get the worst over with. Anyway, in this instance, there may not
be that much to get up in arms over, however for other procedures, I'd
NEVER, EVER want to go through them conscious again, but of course
that requires something other than just a nurse in the room..
Anyway, must my $.0000002
