And he is right. Any plan that covers all Americans by requiring them
to purchase healthcare insurance from the existing for profit
insurance companies will NOT do anything to address the problems of
our healthcare system. It could have been a republican proposal.

Mike

Yup, I do find that rather ironic. The Republicans should be on board
with this, since Hillary and Obama's plans are like a poison pill that
will kill any chance for a single-payer system for the forseeable
future. Unfortunately, the reality is that a single-payer system is just
not on the table because it would be political suicide for anyone who
wants to be President. Obama used to be for it, but now his position is
that he would support it only if we were starting from scratch. He knows
that the enormous power of the entrenched interests would be brought to
bear against him if he tries to take them on.

So what we really have in these plans is the government shoveling large
amounts of tax dollars at insurance companies. Needless to say, they are
all for that.

However I do think there is reason for hope. The only way real reform
can have a chance against the entrenched interests is if there is a
leader who can inspire Americans to put pressure on their
representatives to do the right things. And Obama is an inspirational
leader who could make a real difference in the lives of average
Americans. I am hopeful that he will try very hard to live up to the
tone he has set.
