ZURICH (Reuters) Oct 25 - Swiss medical devices maker Synthes has been
granted conditional approval from U.S. authorities for its ProDisc
spinal disc replacement system for use in the neck area, or cervical
spine.
From Medscape today. I haven't read it yet.

Synthes said in a statement on Thursday that the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration would issue full approval, allowing the product to go on
the market, after it had reviewed ProDisc's manufacturing processes
deemed them to be acceptable.

U.S. rival Medtronic Inc's Bryan cervical disc won support from a U.S.
panel in July for use to replace worn-out discs in the neck. Another
Medtronic product, Prestige, is also cleared for use in the neck.
Synthes's ProDisc-C, as the neck disc replacement product is known, is
seen by many analysts as a future growth driver.

Artificial discs are designed to replace worn-out discs between
vertebrae while preserving the ability to bend.

Synthes said the FDA's decision included a review of the results of a
three-and-a-half-year human clinical trial involving ProDisc-C.

Now if only they had replacement discs for the Lumbar region?

Thanx for the link. Interesting stuff. If they put in a replacment disc
which is the right height,.it might also relieve facet-joint pain.
