wonderfully witty:
Do you know of anyone who doesn't look at the salary when job hunting?
Do you know anyone that looks at the healthcare policy a company when
job hunting? In the last company I worked for raised the cost of the
insurance. They changed to a policy that cost the indivual more and the
company less. Prior to that the employee paid $50 for the whole family.
After the change employees paid around $300. For some that was a killer.
Several people left because of it.
Healthcare benefits are just like salary, part of the overall
compensation package. Along with profit sharing, retirement package,
vacation & tuition assistance but to name a few.
Many employers have been forced to switch providers, increase employee
cost share & provide plans that have higher deductibles & co-pays
because of the rising cost of medical care.
While many people "think" (but not very hard) that Universal
Healthcare will fix the problem, it won't. It might provide more
access, but it will (if anything) probably contribute even more to the
costs.
People leave jobs for all sorts of reasons. At my last organization
we constantly had the young & immortal wanting to know if they could
have more salary for opting out of medical care which they felt they
didn't need. This yet but another thing that adds to the costs of a
policy.
