We are under the care of maniacs.

Slightly different issue, but the only time I have a problem with the
death with dignity folks is when pain control hasn't been explored or
used. It seems as though only those who are dying and in hospice
can be assured of medication, others may view death as the only way
out.

It is horrible that far too many people are forced to consider suicide
as their only escape from pain, only to find that the doors to an an
easy death have been closed to them by the same people who cut off
their access to pain meds--all for the sake of ethics and morals and to
protect the kids as well. I support the right of people to end their
lives at any time for any reason because I feel each of us owns his/her
life and no one should be able to keep you a prisoner on this planet
against your will. But that kind of freedom can so easily be exploited
by those with an agenda of ridding the world of "undesirables": HMOs
and the like who will no doubt offer doctors cash incentives to
persuade patients that their situations are hopeless, here's a bottle
of Nembutal to make it quick, and don't forget to pay the receptionist
on your way out and try not to do it in the parking lot because the
smell is atrocious. The freedom to make choices with your life must be
balanced with education, outreach and all necessary assistance to keep
people from making that particular choice.
