A message from PRN on hearings

Hey folks,

Just passing it on as I got it. We do have some time for a change, so those
of you who wrote CPmission should have something all ready to send. Those
that don't you have time for some drafts, and please if you can't deal with
the stress of doing your own writing, include friends and loved ones, they
see the big picture. You only needs to tell your details and ask them to
whip something off. Eloquence is less important than strength of numbers.
And as you will read this is a direct chronic pain issue, no doubts about
it. Be heard or stay screwed. It comes down to that. If you're medical
situation making you a subject for a hearing on the judiciary committee,
who's focus is crime, doesn't make you mad, nothing will motivate you. They
are already think of us criminals, it's now in the open, to our faces. For
being in pain, nothing more. It should make all of us boil over with anger.

Be heard--og

Subject: DEA Oversight Hearings July 12, 2007
To: PRN Listserve <pain_soc_pol- prnlist.org@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Dear Friends,
The House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on Crime, will be holding
hearings on DEA oversight Thursday, July 12, 2007. As a result of my visit
to DC in early June, the New York Times Magazine Cover article, and the
assistance of many good friends on and around Capitol Hill, I have been
invited to represent the pain issue. The staffer we are working with is
developing the roster and we are supplying her some excellent choices for
patients, doctors, and lawyers. There will be a couple of other issues
represented but it seems that our issue will be solidly featured.

This is a huge opportunity for us to make a strong showing. We will be
calling on all pain patients, and those who care about this issue to make it
to DC for this important day. We are also asking everyone who has a story to
tell, an informed opinion to offer, etc. that they deliver it to their
Congressional representative prior to the hearing so that it may be entered
into the Congressional record.

So lawyers on this list, if you would be so kind as to write up your view of
what has happened here, as it concerned your clients and their patients and
families, and send it to your representative, and copy us at
info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, that would be a really helpful thing to do. If
you need to write down hours billed, you can donate the hours to Pain Relief
Network. A large influx of specific complaints regarding the DEA/DOJ's abuse
of authority ( I would think their abuse of the administrative function as
part of the softening up of the target, as well as the pre-trial asset
freezing, are the most egregious offenses from the Congress's pov) would be
most helpful here.

We hope that we have the opportunity to get enough of the real story out
there that we can roll these hearings into real reform-the goal is to get
the DEA/DOJ out of the business of prosecuting doctors for legal medicines.
The states can take care of that through the boards and through state
prosecutions. If the DEA wants to continue to investigate, they can, but
they will need to get the state to take the action.

The fact that we have been so successful at the state level and so
dramatically unsuccessful at the Federal level is a powerful indicator that
it is the application of Federal power that determines outcome. Moreover,
should the people of a state find that the state is acting to suppress the
management of pain, they can organize against the government's behavior and
change it. The problem here has been that we could not get any response from
DEA. As the police force of the executive, they have been insulated from
popular criticism.

But let's keep the focus on what is wrong here and what we all know has
happened to the good people both doctors and patients, under this reign of
terror.
Please write or call with any questions.
Sincerely,
Siobhan
