ill help you too. i know alot about pain meds thx bb stevo
You already took the test, right? Nothing you can do now but sit back
and wait for the answer as to whether or not you are psychologically
ready for the pump. I know, I've had mine in for 11 years now. I do
know how you feel, I do know what you are thinking. To be perfectly
honest...the pump is not the answer to it all...it is not the answer
to your pain. The answer to your pain comes from your doctor..he
decides what you get in your pump, the millograms per hour, day, etc..
You can tell the doc where you are as far as your pain goes but he
ultimately decides. He/she is the controller. The only difference
between the pump and orals is the way it is absorbed. I get all the
side effects with the pump as I did with orals. I still feel as much
pain. The only difference is that you don't have to worry about when
to take a pill, unless you are lucky enough to get breakthrough meds.
You build up a tolerence to the meds in the pump and need to ask for
increases. Once you get to a point which the doc feels is 'high
enough' they may have you go on a 'drug holiday'. I went on one this
past February, not because I needed to but because my pump ran out of
morphine/baclofen. Withdrawal is really nasty with the pump. I've
gone through pump and oral withdrawal, on high doses - even though I
had proof, like a major scar, the fact that you can feel the pump, my
Medtronic card, my doc's card and even the printout of the last
pumpfill - the doc's at the ER thought I was 'drug seeking'. What
happened this last time was my doc (a neurologist) got word (from my
pharmacy) that I had received a written script for Percocets from my
foot doc..I had signed a 'contract' with the neurologist that stated I
would not get any prescriptions from any other doc's for opiates. He
dropped me immediately. Oh yeah, once you have a doc put the pump
in.....you had better make sure you stick with that doc no matter
what!! Try to find a new or another doc to take care of your pump
once one has released you from his/her care!
I'm rambling now, which I usually do when I talk to others. I found
out who my real friends were when I had the pump implanted. The so-
called friends I had before my pump was put in didn't like how the
pump changed me (meaning my moods due to the morphine), others deemed
me as a 'medical junkie' and still yet were those who were actually
angry/jealous because I qualified for the pump and they didn't. Then
there were a few that didn't think I knew what pain was anymore
therefore I could no longer understand where they were coming
from......seriously now!? It is laughable to think that the pain will
ever go away, ever, even with the pump. The only way to not feel the
pain is to not feel at all.
Anyway, best of luck to you and I hope you reach a place where your
pain is at least tolerable. Peace. Ginny from PA
