Ah Wayne I dont worry about scars anymore at my age ;-) But I have been
asked by
the wildlife out in the woods to please keep covered up because I have
scared them
in my less than matronly cloths :-)
Now I understand about how you woke up in extreme pain. I am going to have
to make
sure in writing that I will get what I need when I am supposed to get it.
Enjoy your weekend and so you wont be stuck in from of your puter answering
questions
from me you let me know when you have time during the week... Questions
like were you
in bed the first week you got home and what about (groan) PT.. I am on
Methadone and
questions about stronger medication...
Thanks Wayne

Thanks I went to look... The doctor first wanted to put in the cage but
after I had
a bone density test it could be done because my bone # is too low they
are
like paper.
So now it it rods and screws. How long before you really felt good with
very little pain
with medication?
I also remembered you as Gashauler.

I am very interested in seeing the pictures if and when you get to post
them. Where did
they take the bone from for the plugs?
TIA
Ronnie
They took the bone from my hip. And you should be able to see the
picture

Most people have the titanium cages put in when the doctors do the
fusion
but mine was different. Instead of using the metal cage or barrel the
doctor used human doner bone. It was shaped the same but the doctor
like
this better because he felt that the bone would graft better and I
would
recovery quicker. He also took bone from my hip and packed the inside
of
the cages.
I had to wear this electronic belt that took 9volt batteries all the
time
around my waist. At the time I lived in Las Vegas NV and was scared to
walk into any casinos thinking they might think I was up to cheat them.
It
put out a maggnetic field to promote bone growth. I haven't seen anyone
else wearing this thing so I don't really know if it's common or
something
the doctor felt I needed. Judging by the x-rays the bone did grow into
the
cages and hasn't given me much trouble. It's all the nerves and scare
tissue that causes me major problems in that area.- Hide quoted text -

Aloha To My Dearest Friends Swirling Around in Cyber-space!
Well, when people interact with other people day and night in and day
and night out, we really only know as much as the other tells us about
them (or someone else does that just happens to be in the same group)
and that's as close to "friends" as a person such as myself (stuck out
here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!) will probably ever get to
any of you. I am just having a 'sentimental moment' for some reason
because my computer almost literally died today and it took every bit
of computer geekiness and a couple of "Restore Points" to save this 5
year old "workhorse" of a computer. When I first got into the
discussions, I scrolled down the first page of them and looked at all
the people's names that I didn't even know existed 5 months ago! Then
a feeling of extreme PRIDE came over me because ALL you VETERAN
members have come such a long way from making this forum a disscussion
from hell to a ROCK SOLID PAIN SUPPORT/INFORMATION (and lots of other
adjectives) GROUP. You veterans should pat yourselves on the back for
getting through all that "ancient history" and working WITH the NEW
MEMBERS , like myself and many others that have come here and decided
to stay even when some threads seem to go into the "Twilight Zone" to
us newbies. I don't know what or how to say "it". I just think from
the day I first saw this User-net group for CP and posted and compared
to what it is today are such opposite sides of a coin! I'm actually
referring (and HAVE BEEN referring) friends and any people I happen to
start talking to and find out they have a billion questions about
their CP. Trouble is, sometimes I don't even catch their names (memory
is shot...surprised?) so if they did pop in I would never know unless
they mentioned this island.
The above paragragh is dedicated to every veteran member that was here
shortly before I came here but has come back, and all those that stuck
it out and now can look and see what you all have created! Virtually
out of thin air! - MAHALO NUI LOA to you all!
OK,enough "brown-nosing? HA-HA!
Wow! Ronnie! When you mentioned that doc saying your bones were to
thin for a fusion it reminded me of one of my surgeons telling me how
"thankful he was that I was 'only' 43" just for that VERY reason!
Meanwhile, I was depressed because I was so, relatively
speaking,"young".
David, for my fusion they DID use that titanium cage/barrel (you're
right, it looks more like a little barrel 'screw' than a cage) and you
should see the "Mariana Trench" worth of bone he "harvested" out of my
left hip! I'm sure there MUST BE 2 or 3 other people walking around
(hopefully) with MY hip bone growing in their backs!! Wild!! Before
that "old original pain" came back after the fusion surgery, the area
where they harvested the bone actually was a HECK of a LOT more
painful than the 6-7 inch incision running from just below my navel to
just above my pubic bone!!! Not to "freak you out" or anything Ronnie,
but you ARE aware that there will be a scar.
I have to tell this because it's so weird!
The surgeon tried his darndest to make the incision right where a
light line of hair that lots of males have going from their navel down
to "Mr. Happy", however, since I was shaved to such a "CLEAN
DEGREE(!!)", he missed it by 1/4 inch too far to the left!!! I was
absolutely shocked at seeing myself absolutely shaved "clean" not just
where the incision was going to be, but all around my "priceless
treasure"!!! I swear I hadn't seen myself like that since I was 10 or
11!!! The nurse sure "got into it" when she was told to "shave him".
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! Cough, cough LOLOLOLOL! gasp! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! (and
I don't remember a bit of it...what a shame...<wink>)
Anyway, Ronnie, I'd LOVE to stike up that conversation with you again
and STAY in touch during this time BEFORE the surgery, while you're
recovering, I'm SURE you'll have a thing (or three!) to say when you
get home from the "horse-pistol" and then we can BOTH keep our fingers
crossed when about 4-6 weeks comes around and goes by and "wait and
see" if any of that "old original pain" starts creeping back in.
Obviously, I must have told you the most hideous 'type' of story I had
to tell you all about it. Again, I don't want to scare you, not
everyone goes through a couple of hours of non-stop screaming from the
pain. Just make damn sure the doctor, anesthesiologist and the nurses
and candystripers are absolutely CLEAR as filtered Hawaiian water from
the 2nd most wettest place on earth, Mount Waialiali, (here on Kauai
(actually, we're TIED for wettest spot on earth with a place in South
America...somewhere in the middle of what used to be the largest
rainforests. That's one of our "claims to fame") that they ALL know
HOW MUCH and exactly WHAT TYPES OF MEDS and HOW MANY TIMES PER DAY you
take them...because THAT was where they messed up BIG TIME with me.
They (meaning everyone I listed above for you) all thought what I took
in ONE DOSE (which is only 25% of my DAILY DOSE!!!) is ALL I TOOK for
a DAILY DOSE! So my Pre-op and the ANESTHETIC(S) during my surgery (It
would have just placed another "feather in that nightmare's cap had I
woke up and not been able to move or say anything during the placement
of those rods and screws!!! I'm sure I'd have died of shock...), AND
shorted me on my POST-OP meds and that is why I woke up mid-skreeeech
from the surgery and continued to do so for the next 120 plus
minutes(until I finally called the head of pain management at Queens
Hospital, which my pain doc was (the usual wizard) so kind to give her
number to me and said, "call her if you have any trouble with your
medications, I wouldn't be surprised if they got it wrong due to the
high dosages you are on." We actually REALLY never thought I'd NEED
to. HA!
Ronnie? You want to write first or shall I? Well, I'd "race ya", but
you are at LEAST 3 hours ahead of me time-wise, but we'll see......heh-
heh...
Ronnie? Obviously YOU know how MY surgery went! So, I'll PRAY that
David has a much better story for you! I really think almost everyone
has, anyway.
Top? I'm NOT ignoring you. LOL! I agree with your friend David
(Gashauler) about seeing if your doctor will fight you on pain meds
and try to at least BEGIN to give you something stronger for your back
pain. YOU obviously have a much higher threshhold of pain, or
something is REALLY screwed up with my lumbar nerves, because after
being in that kind of pain for so long and not even taking ONE opioid
pain medication is AMAZING to me (unless you were allergic or
something, to them...)
The LAST thing you WANT or NEED is a doctor who doesn't cooperate with
you in your "hour of need" and keeps you in a living hell instead of
relieving your pain. David and everyone who's going to have any kind
of major surgery should think about that if they haven't already!
Funny how our "needs" change quickly after we wake up from surgery!
(not really funny...just an expression).
OK, this is too long, so sorry.
Aloha For Now,
Hawaiian Wayne
