This has to do with drastic differences between TV-oriented equipment
20+ years ago, now, and, say 5-10+ years hence.

That's a lot of technical questions about TV for a chronic pain group.
alt.tv might be a better place.

In the mean time, since no one else has volunteered any answers I'll toss
out my opinion.

First of all, your budget is a little low for getting into this.

You can get an inexpensive small plasma TV but you'd be a lot happier with
a larger HD projection TV. They are cheaper than plasma and don't suffer
from burn-in. Get one that accepts a "cable card." Don't worry about the
specs. Just don't buy some no-name brand.

You can use your home stereo if you want, but a home theater audio system
would be a lot better.

Digital is mandated for 2008. However, cable systems will still be pumping
out analog signals after that for those who haven't switched over. A
converter box will be available for less than $50 for those who need it
for broadcast TV.

Spring for an inexpensive DVD player. Many libraries have DVD collections
now and the DVDs are in a lot better condition than the VHS tapes.

Another few cents worth, I've read LCD is the way to go in PC monitors
and agree as I own a couple of wide screen hanns-g 19's monitors, the plasma
uses more energy and burns out faster I beieve I read but do your own
research cuz I'm still useing an old 26' sharp VT, no flat screen or
anything like that, either way I know if you hit an LCD monitor screen it
will kill pixels in a heart beat,

Hmmmm. Hadn't heard that.

I've been running a little 17" LCD on my pc for about 11 months.
It's done some funny stuff but no dead pixels so far. Of course,
I haven't banged it around. Warranty is 3 years parts/labor.
Hope the new TV's are comparable.

knock on wood I haven't, on monitors I
read for sure but not sure about TV's or plazma screens, just a few cents
worth so do the $$$ worth of research before you buy, I would if I were
buying, anyone wanna lend me $350 :) peace...Joe

I may hafta rob a bank my po' self.

Cheers,
Puddin'
