Digital is mandated for 2008. However, cable systems will still be

This is more-or-less guaranteed? Much of my uncertainty
revolves around what the signal vendors will/will-not
offer ...

This what I've read several times, but there are two things that have to
be taken into consideration; this is not mandated and since these are
private corporations they can do whatever they want; and that cable
vendors have a great financial incentive in inducing people to switch to
digital service, so how long analog service will continue to be
available will vary among providers.

For instance, my cable company switched HBO to digital only. There was
no reason to do that except to force people who wanted it to pay for
digital service. They did it because the cable company wants a converter
box in every home so that they can sell more pay-per-view. I was not
going to let myself be pushed into going digital because I have too many
devices in my home that would require converter boxes and the rental
fees just on the boxes would be outrageous, so I decided to do without
HBO. The only thing I really cared about was the Sopranos anyway and so
I've been downloading that to my computer every week a couple of hours
after it airs on the East Coast.

A converter box will be available for less than $50 for those who
need it for broadcast TV.

So I've heard. Not sure I understand exactly what it'll do ...

Spring for an inexpensive DVD player. Many libraries have DVD
collections now and the DVDs are in a lot better condition than the
VHS tapes.

Of that I have no doubt. No room for external DVD (I'm gonna keep
the VCR's). Likely get a LCD HDTV with integral DVD.

Inexpensive DVD players are notoriously short-lived, so it's never a
good idea to combine them with another device.
